Mac Miller The "New" Rapper

Mac Miller is a 19 year old white rapper from Pittsburgh and is climbing the ladder of fame fast.  His music is different compared to traditional rappers and rap groups.  Mac's music does not include killing, struggles, violence, rape etc.  His music is mostly about life in general and even the good in life.  Yes, he raps a lot about marijuana, except these types of rappers (Mac) show how the genre is evolving and becoming less destrucive.  Mac does not degrade women in his music, and most of the time he is talking about his own life and how grateful he is to have all that he does.  I find this music very relaxing and fun to listen to because this type of music relates to everyone.  Although Mac Miller still curses and uses drug references, his music is not nearly as destructive, and detrimental to people and children when compared to the music of Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, N.W.A, 50 Cent, Eminem etc.  Furthermore, Mac Miller is a good example of how rap and hip-hop music is taking a step in the right direction.  Yes, there is still some explicit aspects, but Mac's music is a step towards rappers making happier music, and music that EVERYONE not just "Gangstas" and "Thugs" can relate to.

Check out Mac Miller's New Mixtape "Best Day Ever" and hear first hand what i'm talking about!

Mac is also visiting JMU April 2, so get your tickets and listen to this great music live!

  1. That's cool to see that rap is becoming more positive. I never listen to it, but I've definitely heard of its past lyrical tendencies. However, the fact that he references marijuana makes it un-relatable to me. I think it's near impossible to create music that everyone will be able to relate to. But regardless, a positive vibe in music makes for a lot fun, and it's nice to see rap has musicians like that.

  2. I never really listened to Mac Miller, but after seeing him when he visited JMU I definitely realized he was not the typical rapper. I think its really cool that he can find something else to rap about because it proves the other rappers wrong. Rap is a style of music, and any style of music is very open-ended. Rappers can choose what lyric they want to rap about and Mac definitely puts the others to shame. They no longer have an excuse that its their culture to rap about those sort of things.

And by the way, even though it was Wiz Khalifa's concert, mac Miller definitely out-shined him.

  3. I have been listening to Mac Miller for awhile now when he was still in the Underground and I believe that the genre of Rap/Hip-Hop is transforming into a more positive influence and away from the "killing, and negative influences" on children.

  4. Before I came to JMU, I had never heard of Mac Miller, however that quickly changed, as soon as my roommate started blaring his music, I became an instant fan. After seeing him visit JMU for his tour, the audience myself included were amazed at his different approach or style to rap music. As you stated before, he doesn't rap about killing and his songs do not have negativity in them. Anyone can see this is just a kid who loves to rap about how much he enjoys life and loves smoking weed. He definitely is a positive and a breath of fresh air in the rap community. I think we will see even greater things come from Mac. I know that kids today are starting to realize that rap is not just about the negatives in life, but more importantly the positive and good aspects of life. We owe a thank you to Mac because he one of the few who are changing the face of RAP.
